Humping, or mounting, is actually a sexual position for dogs, but veterinarians who focus on canine behavior express it frequently is performed for some other reasons too.

David S. Spiegel, VMD, with a veterinary behavior practice near Swarthmore, Pa., states in unneutered and unspayed dogs within years old, humping is sexual anyway. However in older dogs, it is a manifestation of dominance, reply to something which has excited your dog, like visitors, coming, or perhaps a sign that the dog has not been socialized properly and doesn’t know appropriate canine behavior.

“The subject draws giggles and laughs, but it is a real issue for many people, Inches Spiegel states. “Some dogs may become very compulsive concerning the behavior.”

Gary Landsberg, DVM, a veterinary behaviorist in Ontario, Canada, states mounting is typical play behavior in young puppies, and it is even normal within the play of older dogs if it does not come to extremes. “You will frequently see one dog mount another, a couple of minutes later they will turn off and yet another dog will fit the very first dog,” Landsberg states. “It is a typical play gesture.”

It is made by men and women, even by dogs which have been neutered or spayed, he states. “It is a play behavior that dogs do because nobody has said excitedly it is not acceptable,” Landsberg reported. “It may become enjoyable or perhaps a common area of the dog’s day, therefore it keeps doing the work. It is just like jumping up or barking in the door.”
